Jasmine by Takamine ES31C – A Black, Budget-Friendly Acoustic-Electric Guitar
One of the best ways for a budding guitarist to get motivated is to get an instrument with reasonable specs and a relatively good sound for its kind. It is for this reason that Takamine established the Jasmine line of acoustic guitars. The Jasmine by Takamine ES31C aims to an instrument that can be taken anywhere and work well whether unplugged or amplified.
The Jasmine by Takamine ES31C is an acoustic-electric guitar that has a dreadnought body shape with a cutaway for easy access to higher frets. It is a laminate guitar made out of a spruce top, nato back and sides and a rosewood fingerboard and bridge. It has basic chrome-plated tuners., a nut width of 1-11/16 inches and a gloss black finish. It is also equipped with a piezo pickup with passive electronics with single volume and tone controls.
The materials and the luthiery behind the ES31C provide a preview of what this guitar can do. First of all, the guitar is a laminate. It’s no solid wood Martin orTaylorguitar so guitarists should not expect the kind of resonance one can get out of a fine solid-wood acoustic guitar. However, this fact offers an advantage as well. Laminate construction, while it sacrifices tone, adds to the stability of the guitar. It’s not as temperamental as a solid-wood or solid-top guitar as it is less prone to changes in humidity. An acoustic guitar player will not be scared to go on tour with this guitar as it is sturdy and is built to be taken anywhere. Being laminate means maintenance is easier as well.
The electronics of the ES31C are passive with only one volume and one tone control. Unlike most active piezo pickup systems, the passive electronics don’t have much room for tweaking the sound. The ES31C’s electronics can therefor only provide a weak, high impedance signal. It would be advisable for a guitarist to make use of a pedal or a rack effect that can provide additional drive and sound shaping such as an EQ pedal. The electronics are no Fishman but they provide a reasonably good sound.
One thing that people interested in the Jasmine by Takamine ES31C is that luthiery for this particular guitar is exceptional. There are people who report being more than satisfied for a laminate guitar. Thanks to its dreadnought body shape, it is reasonably loud on its own. When playing the ES31C, those who actively play gigs do not have to worry about things that can affect a solid body guitar e.g. warping, diminished resale value, etc. The Jasmine by Takamine ES31C has an MSRP of $399 but one can get it off the street at a much lower price. This makes the guitar a perfect, budget-friendly instrument suitable for both beginners and seasoned players.
